Home Energy Rebate Programs

Rebates will help reduce the cost of energy-saving retrofits.

The Inflation Reduction Act included two rebate programs for home energy efficiency and home electrification projects.

  1. The Home Efficiency Rebates (HER) will range from $2,000 to $4,000 for individual households and up to $400,000 for multifamily buildings for energy efficiency retrofits. The rebate will depend on the amount of energy saved.
  2. The Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) will provide point-of-sale rebates to low- to medium-income households for heat pumps; heat pump water heaters; heat pump clothes dryers; electric stoves, cooktops, ranges, or ovens; electric load service center (breaker box/electrical panel); electric wiring; and insulation, air sealing, and ventilation.

To support the rebate programs, the Home Energy Efficiency Contractor Training Grant will help train, test, and certify residential energy efficiency and electrification contractors.

Program status as of April 2, 2024:

On March 22, 2024, GEFA submitted its applications to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the Home Efficiency Rebates (HER) and the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR).

DOE’s review of the applications may take up to three months, but the applications are just the first phase of program implementation. While GEFA’s applications are under DOE review, our team will continue with program design and implementation planning. This includes completing and submitting the implementation blueprints required by DOE prior to program launch. The blueprints address program development in areas such as data access, consumer protection, and stakeholder engagement.

In April, GEFA will host a statewide community engagement webinar to provide additional information and to receive public input. More details about the webinar will be released soon.

While the rebates are not yet available, consumers may be eligible for federal tax credits, the Weatherization Assistance Program, and other incentive programs.
